Evelien Maaskant fabricated an enzymatic biosensor for the amperometric sensing of glucose.
The sensor consisted of a biorecognition element, the enzyme glucose oxidase, and a novel polymeric organometallic redox mediator which transfers electrons from the enzyme to an electrode.
Employing an electrostatic assembly approach, the organometallic redox mediator containing both cationic and crosslinkable functionalities was assembled layer-by-layer with the negatively charged glucose oxidase on an electrode surface. The resulting 3D structure was crosslinked to enhance the stability of the sensor.
Glucose sensing was demonstrated successfully.
