Materials Science and Technology of Polymers

My project focuses on the development of polymeric structures for guiding assembly of bilayer lipid membranes on nanoporous supports and for control of ion permeation through nanopores. Controlled radical polymerization techniques are used to synthesize well-defined and robust stimulus-responsive polymer brushes that can be used as support for stable and functional lipid membranes and as nanopore switches as well. This project is part of the EU-FP7 program ASMENA “Functional Assays for Membrane Protein on Nanostructured Support”, which aims to develop functional nanostructured supports for use in screening of pharmaceuticals and biophysical studies of membrane proteins.
